Hello 5th-grade families,
I am Sarah LeSage, your Science and Language Arts teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. Your class of 2027 marks my 18th year of teaching in the Anthony Wayne school district. The last 14 years have been teaching fifth grade at Fallen Timbers. My first four years of teaching, (2002-2006) were spent as the LEAP/ Gifted Education Teacher for grades 3-6.
When I was a fifth-grader, I lived in Port Clinton, Ohio and spent summers on the open waters of Lake Erie and riding coasters at Cedar Point. After graduating from Port Clinton High School, I went on to graduate from Owens Community College and then Bowling Green State University with an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Reading. My masters thesis focused on the topic of "What motivates 4th, 5th & 6th graders to read the Harry Potter series?" In my research, I fell in love with the "tween" age group. My goal is to motivate tweens to understand and enjoy what they read well enough to become life long readers and learners. At this age, students need to develop reading stamina, much like the stamina needed to participate in athletics.
In 2003 I married Gary LeSage, a financial advisor with Savage and Associates. In 2009 we moved to Monclova to raise our family and join this great school district! This summer was filled with trips to the pool, tennis court, and watching my family golf. We traveled to northern Michigan and Kelley's Island for long weekends.
As our summer comes to an end, I hope you are feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting new school year, I know I am! Braden, 14, will be an 8th grader at AWJH and Elle, 12, will be in 6th grade at Fallen Timbers. Our family loves going to AW events and being part of this community.
I am looking forward to a FUNky year and hope you are too!
Mrs. LeSage
